After returning to the band following a years-long hiatus, what remained of Big Scary was simply ourselves - Tom and Jo - our connection, and our desire to express ourselves through music, just as it was in the very beginning of the partnership. This became the foundation for a great creative outpouring that brought forth 'Daisy' (2021) and now 'Me and You', named to reflect this simple realisation and rebirth of the band.
For 'Daisy' we had our party costumes on, and happily indulged in the kook and the drama that is sometimes in our writing. The works on 'Me and You', written at the same time, are a more natural version of ‘Tom and Jo’. The colours are less hyper, less bombastic, but the songs retain the same spirit of collaboration and play.
We want the album to sound timeless, but with an air of yesteryear. It’s a record of light and shade; of innocence and spoiled beauty. We sing about romantic, protective, possessive and disappointing love; of self destructive holding patterns and outbursts; and reflect on the integrity of casting judgements.
The artwork was chosen from scrolling instagram, and it spoke to us - within the context of all the writing we were doing, we knew there would be more than one album to come out of the sessions. 'Daisy' was the first, one arm of the output. 'Me and You' is the body and soul of it. You can perhaps guess that there is another limb in the wings for one day…
Honestly portrayed relationships, drama, and symbolism have been recurring lyrical or visual references across these works. When we saw “Freeway Casino Lovers” (a painting by Jeff Bohm), it was like all our secret clues had come together - we had toyed with 'Mirror' as an album title; candles were included in our 'Daisy' collage; a gunshot was briefly played with on the opening of a track; and then there’s this elderly couple - a true partnership who’ve lasted, reflected in the type of romance we were looking at in the songs, and (in a non-romantic way) the partnership of Big Scary. The textures of the painted image also feel right for the sonic palette of 'Me and You'.
