Chan’s forthcoming third album, The Bridal Lament, is the next evolution of a major new chapter in her artistry. First developed as a solo theatrical work presented at Liveworks Festival, OzAsia, Arts House and Riverside Theatres with Sydney Festival, The Bridal Lament draws on Chan’s Weitou ancestry (the first settlers of Hong Kong) and reimagines a historical pre-marital ritual, known as the bridal lament, in which brides publicly wept and sang before leaving their families. In her hands, these songs of grief and resilience formed the basis for a striking body of work connecting ancestral ritual with contemporary pop, performance and storytelling. Now, the music from the stage work forms her newest album of the same name, arriving this August.

Preceded by a sling of singles over the past couple of years, “Pomelo Water”, “Smoke and Pepper” and “Seven Sisters” have quietly unfurled the album’s story, each emerging from the vast corners of Rainbow Chan’s multi-faceted sound - from shimmering, euphoric dance pop to emotionally haunting balladry and eclectic art pop. “Under The Laurel Tree” unravels a darker space, born from musings on mortality and existential dread brought about during the early conceptual stages of The Bridal Lament show. Saxophone drifts in mournful layers, weaving a trance-like spell, broken by distorted textures and spectral vocals weighed by notions of grief and wonder, life and death.

Rainbow Chan has established herself as one of Australia’s most distinctive voices. Across a myriad of creative works, her genre-bending art pop has drawn on matrilineal inheritance, cultural memory and diasporic identity.
