The album features an abundance of sampling, which isn’t new for Cool Sounds, but instead of samples being in the periphery of the songs like in past releases, here the band revels in their playfulness by putting them front and centre.

TRACKLIST:
1. The sound of goofy obnoxiousness will soon be permeating your bedroom airwaves and perforating your eardrums.

Kicking off this long player is an EP that was recorded by Billy from Anti Fade in his childhood bedroom in July 2017. The songs came to fruition while AUSMUTEANTS were on tour in Japan 2016. There was a lot of ‘WALLABY BEAT’ / ‘MURDER PUNK’ being played in the background while seeing the sites of Mount Fuji and ‘Bar Fuck Yeah’. In between shows Jake was organising the release of DANNY GRAHAM and PLASTIC AND THE EP’S records on the label he co-ran XEROX MUSIC. Both artists played parts in the sound and ethos of the PANEL BEAT EP. The goal was to make the songs sound unapologetically Australian without pretending to be something they’re not. There’s no fake accents or songs about VB and mullets. Instead, there’s songs about every day struggles, like dealing with fickle fashion followers, having too many fucking records, playing PlayStation, resentment and manipulation. 500 copies were pressed and self released, with a photo slipped inside each copy at random. Next is THE DEATH OF THE VINYL BOOM which was self recorded in a shed in November 2017. This is the only Alien Nosejob release (besides this comp, smartarse) to feature a cover - Flyblown by Adelaidean arty weirdo band JACKSON ZUMDISH. The idea behind this EP was to incorporate the simplicity and scrappiness of the late 70’s DIY Australian sound, but give them the complicated structures of prog songs. Scum stats - 500 copies, self released. Several copies were smeared with Jake’s blood and had smashed pieces of vinyl glued to the front cover. Now we have a cover of the DEAD KENNEDYS. The conspiracy theorist wet dream Government Flu. Recorded September 2020 during lockdown in one-man-band with a tape recorder fashion for a 20 minute unedited ‘live set’ video where all instruments were played one by one, sung and mixed in the space of a couple of hours.

The HC45 7” was recorded at the same time as a disco 12” maxi, which I hear were originally meant to come out on the same day. Shit happens I guess? This EP came out in Feb 2020 and sounds somewhere between early GANG GREEN, DIE KREUZEN and the BEASTIE BOYS old bullshit. Self recorded on a 4 track with a broken pinch roller. Lyrically this thing is cynical and choc-a-bloc full of satire and hate. A year later a sequel was recorded the same way, on the same machine. No fucking disco this time though. Cold Bare Facts is the most recent recording on this comp. Self recorded in Jake‘s bedroom 2022 It has the same mid paced tempo as DYS or SSD when they’re at their slowest (pre-Boston Curse, of course!). Both songs take a stinky shit on the Australian state police. 300 copies. Finishing the record is a cover by THE AINTS. Originally written by ED KUEPPER for THE SAINTS Eternally Yours album, but it sounded too similar to Lost and Found. The eagerly awaited album was the first release on Wilson's newly established Forge label (named after his two boys Fenn and George) and again featured long-time guitarist Shannon Bourne & drummer Dave Folley, along with Chris Rogers on bass, Kerryn Tollhurst, Cindy Boste, Sarah Carroll and Skip Sail.

Chris Wilson was a giant of Australian blues and roots music. A big man with a big voice and an even bigger heart, he followed in the footsteps of early pioneers like Dutch Tilders, Matt Taylor and Broderick Smith (and led the way for the likes of Jeff Lang, Ash Grunwald and the Teskey Brothers) and took his feeling for blues into the rock and punk worlds, eventually becoming the heart and soul of Melbourne’s legendary thriving live scene.

Wilson began his career with the pub R&B/soul rocking Sole Twisters before joining heavy hitting post-punk blues enthusiasts Harem Scarem in time for their revered Pilgrim’s Progress album - taking centre stage with his harp on their burning version of Iggy & The Stooges' “Open Up & Bleed” amongst other great tracks - in 1986. He was known initially as an instrumentalist; he was often seen with a sax hanging off his neck but it was his harp playing that quickly drew attention. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, he was adding harp to the work of friends Hunters & Collectors (he played on 1987’s What's a Few Men), Crowded House on their album Woodface, punk-rock legends X, and most famously, Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls (and most famously there on "Dumb Things”), with whom he undertook a 45-date North American tour.

Soon enough Chris found his voice upfront of his own group, Crown of Thorns. And what a voice it was; a rich, elastic baritone that fearlessly traversed areas that few since Tim Buckley had ventured through. At the same time Wilson also made his mark as a songwriter, and seemingly overnight he became the complete package.

Local success for records by Crown of Thorns and another project, The Pubdogs, featuring “Evil” Graham Lee of Triffids/Coloured Girls fame – all released on a label run by 3RRR’s revered blues DJ Max Crawdaddy - led to a deal with Mushroom's Aurora label, home also to Archie Roach. Debut solo album Landlocked followed and in 1993 he was nominated for best male artist and breakthrough artist at the ARIAs. That in turn was followed by Live at the Continental, which soon became his fans’ favourite, and which had a deep resonance with many.

In 1996, Mushroom paired him up with Diesel as Wilson Diesel for the hugely successful Short Cool Ones - a top 20 smash. The sprawling double CD The Long Weekend followed in 1998 and showed the huge potential of his appeal to an audience of pub-going rock fans who grew up on the Dingoes and Cold Chisel and the like. Along the way Chris opened for both Bob Dylan (who sought him out backstage to shake his hand) and Elvis Costello and earned himself a clutch more ARIA nominations.

Chris soon turned away from the spotlight, preferring to play local and hang with his young and also musical family; wife Sarah Carroll was a member of much-loved country trio Git amongst other projects. They moved down to the Bellarine Peninsula, and Chris continued life and work as a harmonica teacher, running programs for boys at local schools and phoning in music book reviews to 3RRR-FM's influential Off The Record program. And the music still flowed. New albums, new projects, and he was by now a scene elder - he had new artists who could use his helping hand. Late in his life, as sons Fenn Wilson and George Carroll Wilson (aka Pollyman) started making names for themselves on the scene, he recorded a final album featuring his new-found drumming skills and teamed up again with old mate Steve Lucas from X in the roaring pub blues rock band the Heinous Hounds, which featured one time Keith Richards & The X-Pensive Winos member Jerome Smith and another old pal, drummer Ash Davies.

In July 2018, Chris announced that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was unlikely to perform again. His final album was released, eponymously titled. A fundraising concert at the Corner Hotel was organised and quickly sold out. Chris passed away on January 16 2019 to an outpouring of grief as great as any that Melbourne had experienced in a long time.

On October 8 2020, it was announced that Chris would be posthumously inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame. Scream

For Tori Zietsch, who records emotionally direct and woozily romantic songs under the moniker Maple Glider, music has been an escape from a series of oppressive institutions: religion, enervating relationships, her own brain. Zietsch’s music has formed new pathways both literal and metaphorical; physical and neural, that have allowed her to step outside herself, and shake you—yes, you, the listener—by the hand.

At 14, Zietsch freed herself from her restrictive and deeply limited religious upbringing and at 15—after learning to play guitar from a chord book—she played her first show, at a skate park. After touring the open mic scene in Brisbane, moving internationally to the UK, and returning to Melbourne, she released her critically lauded debut album To Enjoy is the Only Thing in 2021, which Rolling Stone described as “one of the most accomplished debut albums in recent years.”

I Get Into Trouble is a thematic expansion of her debut, going into greater and clearer detail, as she delves back into her Christian childhood while deconstructing her relationship to her body and her sexuality, alongside concepts of consent and shame. “Dinah,” a deceptively whimsical ditty, is the album’s entry-point to these themes, and it’s as infectious as an earworm wriggling through Eve’s apple. “I’ve been in the church making sure no one’s looking up my skirt,” she sings, on one of the poppiest songs she’s ever recorded.

Throughout Zietsch’s second album, she draws similar parallels between religion and sexuality in novelistic detail, before landing on a note of hopeful optimism, and embracing a new life of peacefulness. “This album feels more like an opening up because there are things I wasn't feeling ready to publicly share through songs, but now I finally feel ready,” she says.

Ultimately, I Get Into Trouble is the sound of alchemized pain. In each song, Zietsch transmutes tribulation and confusion into clarity and deep insight. She combines the infectious folk-pop hooks of her debut with a sense of scape and scope. It’s tight in all the right places, free-form, wiley and compositionally eclectic, playful, and erratic in others. That experimentation was the result of letting the songs roam free in the room, jamming alongside fellow musicians [their names here]. ‘Two Weeks’, a song about feeling skeptical of your own feelings, is appropriately indecisive and shifty in its tone, tempo and structure. The pacing is masterful, jumping between taut grooves and slow, unfurling sections of lacksaidaiscal guitar and candied vocals.

The profound trust in her collaborators as well as her newfound confidence in the studio enabled Zietsch to venture down to the very basement of her being and flare up to the surface. On ‘Don’t Kiss Me’, one of the album’s standout tracks, she forgoes her typically mellifluous vocal style to quite literally scream her heart out. “That was a particular moment of heightened emotion,” she says.

Zietsch wrote I Get Into Trouble in multiple houses, in multiple states of mind, and across multiple timelines in her life. The result is a precise diorama of her life and mind, as she revisits her most difficult moments, while processing and healing in real-time. Often on I Get Into Trouble, her multiple timelines collide. It’s a convergence best represented by ‘You At The Top Of The Driveway’—a song she wrote under a mulberry tree reminiscent of the one in her childhood garden, and dedicated to her niece—Zietsch’s songwriting muse.

Her lyrical style is stark and unblushing. Reaching a hand directly out to her listener, Zietsch sings as though she has nothing to hide. “My bank account’s not healthy and neither’s my sex life,” she sings matter-of-factly on ‘FOMO’. “It’s kind of just a natural way of writing for me,” says Zietsch, “if it doesn't feel like honest to me, then I don't really connect with the song and then I don't really see the point of it.” In song, Zietsch embraces the opportunity to be plainly and painfully honest.

For Zietsch, songwriting is a kind purging; recording an attempt at bottling multiple explosions. “You know, it helps clean the brain out and allows me to sort of deal with things and understand things better.”

In understanding herself better, Zietsch continues her mission of self-emancipation through song. Tom, you are splendid company, and a unique producer, musician, songwriter and storyteller. Thanks for being so accepting of the ebb, the flow and the stillness. Congrats on being a #1 Dad to a new baby girl in 2023, and for having a wonderful sock collection. Thanks to Adam Heath for playing guitar on ‘Two Years’. I very much enjoy land gigs with you. Thanks to Bridgette, Malachi, Adam, Jim, Ollie and Julian for making me laugh so much. You are the best gliders. To Kara and Jacob, thanks for supporting me through the creation of this album, but also unthankyou to Jacob for fucking with my window wipers. Thank you to Kara again. I keep my little book of strengths close. Ci Ci, Good girl Natty, Bad girl Gigi, Immy, Sonny girl, I love and adore you and our friendship. Thanks again to Bridgette Winten for many things, including getting hives with me after shooting this album cover (with Mal, thanks Mal). Also to Ep, Robyn, Trig, and Gorgeous Girl. It was a pleasure to piss in your long grass. Thanks to Bridgette Winten for the pics, Madison Griffiths for the illustrations and Ismael Pieter for the cover design. Thanks to Joe for so many things, but especially for sitting in nature with me listening to birds sing and for pointing out all the beautiful things in the world that I find beautiful too. And also for doing so much laundry. My love to Louise, Ben, Ez and Roars. A second home. And to Caleb, calls with you and Lennox are my favourite times of the year. I love you. In the break that followed, Tom made two albums with No Mono, and his third #1 Dads album. Jo started a second label imprint, Hotel Motel Records. This simple idea blossomed into a more equal collaboration - sharing songwriting and lyrics more than before, and just the two of us recording the albums in our Collingwood studio BellBird - Tom showed Jo how to engineer using ProTools so that we could track each other’s parts. This became the foundation for a great creative outpouring that brought forth 'Daisy' (2021), 'Me and You' (2022), and now 'Wing' - the final limb that enfolds the trio.
These albums share common threads and themes, with a central focus on love and relationships. Here on 'Wing' a slight cynicism of ‘love’ has crept in at times - taking stock of expectations versus reality. This rule isn’t hard and fast though, and there is always, always space for hope. With a tenacious positivity we find ourselves in liminal states - probing the status quo, or even grasping for the divine. And sonically, space and ideas are lingered upon, allowed to stretch out.
The wing: a limb that enfolds. Something ‘to the side’ of the main, yet something crucial and supportive. Both bands transgressed the accepted boundaries of punk, and both pushed audience excitement buttons with high energy, great tunes, an outrageous visual element and a willingness to not only include '60s pop influences into their punk sounds, but also flashy and trashy '70s hard rock.

Indeed, two bands were arguably the first two to understand the musical thread that joined Kiss and the Ramones, and in doing so they together helped make the world a brighter place.

Current Hard-Ons singer Tim Rogers goes back decades with Redd Kross too - a young You Am I were on the bill when Redd Kross toured Australia with the Hoodoo Gurus back in 1994.

REDD KROSS & THE HARD-ONS have also recently both celebrated anniversaries and received the kind of kudos that only occasionally comes with their levels of dedication and perseverance. Redd Kross last year marked their 45th anniversary with their most acclaimed album to date (a self-titled double LP on In The Red Records), as well as a revelatory movie documentary and book. Formed under in '79 under the long distance guidance of infamous LA producer/Svengali Kim Fowley (Runaways, Hollywood Stars etc, and a man with writing credits for Kiss, Alice Cooper and many more) they only released one single in their lifetime but recorded enough high quality demos for an album, which, as presented here, reveals a hitherto untold story significant in terms of both Australian rock history and the lore of international power pop might-have-beens....

The Breakers formed around the talents of two individuals who had crossed paths with Fowley when he was in Australia over Xmas '78. It's a testimony to Fowley's eye for talent that he was able to meet musicians from opposite ends of the Australian music scene - one the songwriter/bass/player heartthrob for a Sydney-based '50s/60s revival combo who had previously scored a #1 album and a handful of Top 10 hits, the other a songwriting guitarist from two of Melbourne's most notorious (and subsequently highly collectable) punk bands - and recognize a shared pop sensibility. In Jimmy Manzie from Ol' 55 and Jarryl Wirth from Babeez and News (Fowley also recorded Wirth solo under the name Lonely Boys for Bomp!), Fowley found two unexpected allies who together would work out a modern style of modern power pop not too dissimilar to that forged by another Australian band with Fowley connections, The Innocents, whose classic 45 "Sooner or Later" was produced by Manzie and is indeed rumoured to feature The Breakers playing most instruments!

Night After Night: Long Lost '79-80 Recordings By Kim Fowley's Hard Rocking Sydney Power Pop Proteges brings together fourteen of the The Breakers' best tracks, all studio recordings bar great live recordings of the News classic 'Sweet Dancer Au-Go-Go' and a great and otherwise unrecorded original called "Can You Hear Me Singing On The Radio". Included is the track "‘The Girl with Stars in Her Eyes" which the band appeared performing on stage in a Sydney pub in the cult Australian film Puberty Blues, and superior demo versions of the two tracks featured on their sole single, "When I'm On TV" and "Lipstick And Leather", the latter being a Manzie-Fowley co-write rumoured to have later been demoed by Kiss!

Pretty much everything on here could be a hit single, and over the fourteen tracks you'll hear echoes of not only The Innocents but the likes of Cheap Trick, The Cars, The Rubinoos, The Records, The Quick and even later bands like Candy and Redd Kross!

The LP features a four-page full colour 12x12 insert featuring numerous images, press clippings and lengthy liner notes by Dave Laing of Ugly Things and Grown Up Wrong! Somewhat unsuited to the pub circuit, the band decided to play high schools to get themselves heard. It worked; this very recording helped them get a deal with EMI. Bizarrely though, the label wanted them to ditch the early Beatles style and they sat on their hands while the band amassed a legion of school age fans to rival what they had at home. After one single and a Best New Group nomination on TV's Countdown Awards - which caused a small riot when another group won - Beathoven were cut loose. The album comprises 12 introspective instrumentals - deep, cinematic odysseys steeped in romance and sincerity, with an unmistakable ‘freak funk bump’.

Jenkins explains the conceptualisation of & Friends:

“I wanted to write a record I would look forward to recording with my friends. The music I was writing had a funk sensibility in the bass and drums, contrasted by a more cinematic approach in the harmonic and melodic content, with guitars slipping and sliding in between. I tried to make that contrast the character of the record. I felt that every song should have the same instrumentation and with the same personnel. This became an enjoyable creative constraint; how much variation could I pull out of the same 8 instruments over the course of the album? I wanted to find as much diversity as I could within these tight bounds.”

Jenkins applied these principles to the recording of & Friends, bringing together longtime musical collaborators Hudson Whitlock, Darvid Thor and Callum Riley (Karate Boogaloo), Lachlan Stuckey and Jethro Curtin (Surprise Chef), Lewis Coleman and Lena Douglas (The Cactus Channel) to realise unconventional arrangements across three guitars, piano, string synthesizer, Hammond organ, drums and bass, with Jenkins himself assuming bass guitar and production duties.

The resulting album is a strikingly unique melange; moments of picturesque ambience move into head-nodding funk, with the three guitars and three keyboards precisely arranged across the stereo field throughout. The record displays the influences of film composer Bernard Herrmann, lounge pioneer Les Baxter and Motown’s Lamont Dozier, alongside Jnbo’s own eccentric idiosyncrasies.

Tracklisting:

Around
Missing
Dogs
Ten Cent Piece
Letting Down
Letting Go
Name
False Cut
Blood Nose
All
Close
Last

Nat Pavlovic 'Big Heart' LP Baby Blue Regrind Vinyl

Nat Pavlovic's new album, Big Heart is an exploration of love in all its forms: for friends, for family, for lovers, for self.
