It was a period of many firsts for Al Matcott: his first time working with a producer; his first time recording in an established studio; and his first time collaborating with his live band - Brendan West (he/him; bass), Miranda Holt (she/her; drums) and Steve McLennan (he/him; guitar).

Finding inspiration in classical literature, philosophy, poetry, and bands like Interpol and A Place To Bury Strangers, Al Matcott adopts a series of characters throughout Summer’s Coming to tell stories punctuated with his masterful songwriting craft: caterwauling guitars, a blistering rhythm section and a dark, despairing mood. His engrossing lyricism focuses on the encroaching climate crisis - “It’s what keeps me up at night. What is happening to mother earth should be viewed as an act of violence.” he firmly states - and delves into daily tensions that many of us face: the unrelentingly addictive design of social media, being held hostage by your own mind and turning to meditation, and continually pulling that same irritating-as-all-hell tarot card that holds a mirror to the ugliest parts of yourself. His releases saw swift support from CLASH, The Indie Scene, Radio X (UK), Triple R, Double J, Pilerats and many others, all praising his strong storytelling and delicate balance of the dark and the light across expertly written songs. Al Matcott is a firm staple of Naarm/Melbourne’s live music scene, having played over 30 shows in the last 12 months including Boogie and Leaps and Bounds Festivals, and shows with Flyying Colours, Bad Habits and more.

Tracklist:

Everyone’s Gonna Let You Down
Four Walls
O My Darling
If I Can’t Make You Mine
Dead Already
Eyes
Our Mother The Mountain
Knight Of Cups
A Woman’s Work Is Never Done
Summer’s Coming

The Stems 'Mushroom Soup' LP Black Vinyl

The Stems came roaring out of Perth in the mid Eighties with a sound and style that definitively captured the spirit and enthusiasm of sixties garage music - lurching fuzz-tone guitars, brooding organ and solid gold garage-punk! She turned inward to mine the field of emotional matter and service it to the materialisation of songs.
Tucked away in East Village cafes, Cherote snatched the city’s quiet mornings to gather lyrics on paper before heading home to interweave her musings with fingerpicked guitar. Whilst working a day-job, she listened to 60s Disney soundtracks; compositions possessed by wild string arrangements and soaked in an otherworldly mystique. These recordings inspired a sound palate for Cherote's album that bridges folk traditions with elaborate orchestral arrangements.
Performing her songs at open mic nights in NYC ensued when; the timely attendance of composer and producer Brian Trahan sparked a collaboration that would provide the depth of field that Stephanie had imagined for the album. “Up until that point I had been stubbornly self-sufficient. Carrying the essence of the writing process, raw vocal and guitar performances were captured and then a ferocious orchestral session concluded the seven-day recording schedule.

The album reveals the commentary that simmers within the depths of one’s existential restlessness; chewing on a language that reflects, condemns, disowns, reclaims, and reconciles. Lyrically spun melodies reside within delicate webs of acoustic guitar, backlit by luminous orchestral arrangements that morph like the imaginings of a child. It is a body of work that wears a prominent human stain; punctuated by intuitive nuances and a reaching-for that is deficient in today's vastly airbrushed music. It stretches away from the mainland of palatable music and is a beacon to the perceptive, poetic-spirited listener.

Tracklisting:

Summer Love
What Becomes Of The Things I’ve Seen?
Faces
The Hours
To Be True
You Who Knew
You Forever Elude Me
All Because Of You
Crazy Man
Flightless Crow
Me & My Longing

Barb Waters 'Rosa Duet' LP Recycled Vinyl

In 2003, Barb Waters' ‘Rosa Duet’ debuted on the Australian airwaves. To be released Friday March 15, 2024, the album has already been proceeded by three stellar singles - the anthemic mission statement "Back to Square One", "Alamein Line", which was premiered internationally in August by esteemed UK magazine Shindig!, and most recently present the '70s-styled dancefloor party starter "The House Of Love" - which have had power pop pundits the world over getting excited!

Wesley Fuller was first discovered by legendary English A&R man James Endeacott, who previously discovered The Strokes and The Libertines. Fuller signed to Endeacott's Sony-UK affiliated 1965 Records label in 2015 and started making waves with his 2016 EP Melvista – which Clash Magazine (UK) called “gloriously imaginative psych pop”. He cemented this early promise on his debut album Inner City Dream – twelve tracks of swirling psych, jangly pop and punchy, crunchy glam – around which he toured across the UK and Europe including an appearance at Spain’s iconic Purple Weekend festival, garnering attention from the likes of the NME and BBC6 along the way.

Fuller first made a name for himself early in the second decade of the millennium, up front of Perth power pop outfit Hurricane Fighter Plane (who took their name from a wigged-out song by late '60s Texan combo the Red Krayola). Hurricane Fighter Plane made a handful of singles, including the brilliant Byrds-indebted "I Can't Win". Discovered online by legendary English A&R man James Endeacott (The Strokes, The Libertines) who signed Wesley to his label Sony UK -affiliated label 1965 Records, Fuller moved to Melbourne where he met and worked with like- minded folk like You Am I's Davey Lane. Soon he was making waves internationally with his 2016 EP Melvista and his 2017 debut album Inner City Dream, around which he spent an extended period of time touring Australia and in the UK and Europe. Of course, at the start of the new decade, the world changed and Fuller's ability to keep the momentum going was lost.

"It was the late summer of 2019 and I'd just returned home to Melbourne after a European Tour (and several months overseas following that). I'd just ended a long-term relationship, and I'd never felt so disconnected from my friends in the Melbourne music scene - having not played locally in almost a year.

“With no gigs booked, a second album still yet to be written and recorded and so many old connections to try and rekindle, I knew that I was essentially starting from scratch.I'd lost all the momentum I'd built up in 2018, so I was back to square one. It was time to get cracking on album #2!”

The result of that disconnect and of hours of isolated work throughout lockdown and beyond, Fuller's second album is ready to go. "Back to Square One", which was the first taste of that new album, is a dazzlingly brilliant retro-futuristic pop stomp, and a self-depreciating acknowledgment of the artist's current whereabouts. That self-depreciation is also punningly present in the title of the forthcoming album. Having recently played his first few shows for a few years, Wesley will soon start playing out in earnest, in preparation for the new album's release. He's got some big musical promises to deliver on; after all, no one goes back to square one with plans to stay there.

Tracklisting:

Back To Square One
Alamein Line
Jacaranda
Pacific Coast Highway
Everything Is Strange
Inside and Out
Trade War
Counting Down The Days
The Velvet Affair
The House of Love
Look No Further
Worthwhile
All Of My Dreams

Minibikes 'Freaky Dreams' LP Black Vinyl

Things happen slowly in the world of Minibikes… Time seemed to be a big influence on writing, recording and releasing this album. It all started when I walked past the mural that’s on the album cover. It was an aquamarine slice of paradise on the side of a motel, and it set the mood for writing the songs. I wanted to capture lush fantasy and grimy reality in the same place, so I spent a long time gazing at this scene, trying to evoke that feeling in the songs. Along the way I’d be in other towns on the east coast of Australia and similar images of palm trees and whales would reveal themselves, as if by magic they seemed to be everywhere like in some freaky dream. I discovered they were all the work of artist Geoff Slater, who turned out to be awesome and generously allowed me to use the cover image. When I emailed him and explained how I’d been inspired by his work he said “Inspiration has natural power”. I thought “Wow, this guy walks the walk”, so I wrote “Magic Happens” as a tribute to the beachy, 70’s new-age vibes I was imagining him exuding. Now I’ve never met Geoff and I may be completely misrepresenting him in my thinking, but without a doubt he’s a big part of the Freaky Dreams story.

The rest of the songs followed, all of them trying to meld seemingly disparate imagery or instrumentation into a single, if slightly blurry vision.

Al Matcott 'Summer's Coming' LP Limited Edition Black & Red Smash Vinyl

Summer’s Coming was written over two years and recorded under the watchful eye of producer Wade Keighran (The Scare, Wolf & Cub, Elvis - music supervisor) between Head Gap Studios in Naarm/Melbourne, Golden Retriever Studios in Eora/Sydney and The Tender Joint in Colomatta/the Blue Mountains.

This is not the place to bore you with the ¨how´s and why´s of the stops and starts and lost tapes¨ but we manged to get the recording side of it finished in July 2023

I then took the tracks back home to Spain to have them mixed and Mastered by Mike Mariconda (Raunch Hands, Devil Dogs, 9 Pound Hammer, The New Bomb Turks, Holly Golightly, Jack Oblivian, Barrence Whitfield)

Most of the ideas for these songs were conceived in my home in Spain BUT they most certainly became reborn walking thru my old haunts/streets in Philly, soaking in it's smell, the way it moves, looks and feels, remembering times from more 20 years of frequenting the ¨city of brotherly love¨ and letting those memories and impulses that struck me shape and mold the songs and performances while recording.

The formula for recording these songs was to keep the ideas fresh, I would spend 15 or 20 minutes with the drummer Jeff Castner showing him a loose song structure and accent points, then we would start to roll the tape and make takes, if my memory serves me well we had each song in 3 takes or less, go into the control room have a listen together and decide on if we wanted to do another take, most of the time we didn't!! Jamie would do his ¨mad scientist¨ thing offering up different ideas for sounds and effects to flesh out the songs then Mike Kiker would come in later in the evening and add Bass guitar and keyboard parts and then even later Jill Snarburg would add her vocals and backing vocals to round it all out. The basic tracking took 3 to 4 days which I believe kept the songs open and fresh with a direct feel and energy.

My original idea was that Jamie Mahon would mix the album but he suggested the album would be served well by having a fresh set of ears hearing it and mixing from a slightly different perspective. I was visiting some good friends in Virginia lying in bed wondering who I might ask to mix the album when I got a call from my brother Julian Marco, we got to talking and he suggested I talk to Mike Mariconda who was living in a small town near Valencia, which in turn is not that far away from where I live in Denia.

In the past I had worked only briefly with Mike many years ago when I was asked to play some guitar for my brothers in Los Chicos on a record he was producing. I had listened to Mike's music and producing from a far for many years so I knew that what he might do could very easy be up my alley sonically speaking, I spoke to Mike briefly when I got home from America, sent him a rough mix of a song to see if he might be interested, luckily for me (hopefully you too!) he was up for it! So Mike started doing his thing, the mixers flowed freely and we just went with what we thought best served the song, never trying to overcomplicate the mix or the song.
